Drinking, Waste & Storm Water Utilities
The Public Works Department is responsible for managing the City's Water Utilities which includes drinking water, wastewater and storm water.
The City's Water Utility Department is committed to providing safe, adequate, reliable and affordable utility services consistent with local, state and federal regulations and applicable industry standards and practices. Water in Altoona is provided by a municipal water system with six wells capable of pumping over 950 gallons per minute with an average daily usage of about 1.3 million gallons. The Water Utilities Department manages the wastewater collection system that is conveyed through a major interceptor sewer and lift station system to the Eau Claire Wastewater Treatment Plant where it is treated. The Utilities Department also manages a storm water collection system that collects storm water from local roads and other property and conveys it to discharge points located throughout the community.
Activities performed by the Water Utilities Department include storm and wastewater line maintenance, cleaning and repair; drinking water quality testing; water hydrant maintenance; pump and well maintenance; regional storm water pond maintenance; environmental permit administration; and engineering and construction management.

Streets
The Altoona Streets Department's mission is to maintain the City's streets in a condition that assures the safety, health and welfare of users of the streets.
Altoona's Street Department is responsible for maintaining over 68 miles of roads within the City of Altoona. Maintenance activities provided by the street department include filling potholes; sign maintenance; striping (street lines); street cleaning; crack sealing; curb and gutter repair; road grading; snow plowing; trail maintenance; engineering and construction management; and building and equipment maintenance. The street department also helps manage reconstruction and new street construction projects.
