Drivers can expect delays on River Prairie Drive as road construction starts

ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) -- If you travel on River Prairie Drive in Altoona you'll be seeing traffic delays starting Tuesday when the road is reduced to one lane in both directions.

The road changes are just the first step in preparing for the opening of Woodman's and the Kwik Trip in September; both projects are part of Altoona's new "Front Porch Project."

"This is a necessary evil so that, if we didn't do it we'd have very significant delays, traffic problems in the future," said City Administrator, Mike Golat.

He added the road changes are in preparation for the increase traffic flow the area will see as the project continues to move forward. Golat added the entire "Front Porch Project" is right on schedule.

"Finally we are starting to see bricks and mortar coming out of the ground and infrastructure and it is very exciting," Golat said.

Golat explained even though drivers will be frustrated with the road changes, it's an exciting time for the growth of Altoona.

"By the end of next year everything should be buttoned up and everyone should be able to enjoy that area," said Golat.

Drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route during peak driving times. One option is to take Highway 12 into the city. Drivers should also note, Spooner Avenue is closed for construction right now as well.
