With growth of nearly 5 percent, Altoona was the third-fastest-growing city in Wisconsin from 2010 to 2013, according to new estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The report indicates Altoona gained 331 people to reach a population of 7,056 in 2013, up 4.9 percent from 6,725 in 2010.That growth rate tied with Sun Prairie and was behind only the 10.6 percent increase posted by Verona and the 5.2 percent rate of Middleton, all Madison suburbs, among Wisconsin cities.
Galesville in Trempealeau County was the state's fifth-fastest-growing city, adding 71 residents to reach a population of 1,556, a 4.8 percent increase. Hudson ranked ninth by growing 3.5 percent to 13,179 during the three-year period.
Eau Claire, with an estimated 2013 population of 67,545, remained the state's eighth-largest city behind Milwaukee (599,164), Madison (243,344), Green Bay (104,779), Kenosha (99,889), Racine (78,199), Appleton (73,596) and Waukesha (71,016), the new figures show.
Nationally, Eau Claire's population ranked 506th out of 743 incorporated places with at least 50,000 people.
Eau Claire gained 1,617 residents from 2010 to 2013, giving it a 2.5 percent growth rate that was tied for 390th in the United States with several communities, including Salt Lake City, Utah; Davenport, Iowa; Anaheim, Calif.; and West Palm Beach, Fla.
Eau Claire's 0.8 percent population increase (up 531 residents) from 2012 to 2013 put it in a tie for 348th with several cities, including Miami; Fresno, Calif.; and Missoula, Mont.
New York City added 61,440 people in the year ending July 1, 2013, to continue to be the nation's most populous city by a wide margin with 8.4 million residents, followed by Los Angeles with 3.9 million and Chicago with 2.7 million.
