Fire damages vacant home in Altoona

Friday, January 16, 2015
Matt Hoffman, Nikki Junewicz: WEAU

Altoona, Wi. (WEAU) -- Investigators in Altoona had a long night, working into the morning, at the scene of an house fire.

It broke out just after 9 p.m. Thursday on Garfield Avenue. As of 5:30 a.m. Friday, investigators were still at the site.

When firefighters first arrived, flames were shooting out from the top of the home and thick, black smoke was coming from the roof.

Xcel Energy responded and says an electrical problem could be to blame.

There were reports of an explosion, but officers say those noises may have been a blown-out window.

Relatives of the couple that own the home say the pair moved out in November. The house has been vacant since then, but family members have been checking on it regularly.

The relatives say the owners were planning on putting the home on the market soon. They say the home has been broken into three times since it was vacated.
