Community tours new Altoona school, some parents concerned

Altoona (WQOW)--Kids in Altoona are excited about a new elementary school opening its doors, but some parents we spoke with Thursday shared concerns.

Thursday, the community got to see inside the school for the first time. School leaders told us they are also excited for the new space which features a full size gym, bigger classrooms and improved art and music areas to bring creativity to life.

"I think the design of the school creates a creativity and curiosity in students," said Superintendent Connie Biedron. "We want students to walk in, dream big dreams and be curious about the future in learning. I think this building will get them off to that start."

Not everyone is excited about the location of the new building. Some parents we spoke with told us they are worried about not having a sidewalk along busy Hwy. KB where the school is located.

"For safety of the children walking, there is no safe walking area on that road out there, so it concerns me for the children," said Kristine Lenberg. "We would enjoy it too having the playground out here, and having a trail to bike out here and use the facilities."

The school district told us it is up to the city to put in a sidewalk along the highway. City leaders told us there is no funding in place for the project, and they would have to work with Xcel Energy to move large power poles.
