Altoona (WQOW) -- Back in December of 2017, News 18 reported a woman was hit and killed while crossing an uncontrolled intersection in Altoona, at night.

That woman was Zize Sabani, 69. On Wednesday, a stranger to her, teamed up with the Altoona Police Department to honor Sabani and help protect the community.

Amy Baumgarten didn't know Zize Sabani, but she does know her son, the owner of Altoona Family Restaurant, Eddie Sabani. Five months after Sabani was killed, Baumgarten bought 75 reflective vests, which Altoona Police will keep in their cars, to give to pedestrians walking in the dark.

"It's all about safety. It's about putting our community first, it's about putting another tool or resource available to our general public, and just protecting them," said Police Chief Jesse James. "It was a very appropriate initiative and partnership and a small token in giving back some generosity back to the family and those affected by Mrs. Sabani's death."

Eddie Sabani told News 18 he's grateful for Baumgarten's and the police department's efforts to help prevent another family from going through the same tragedy, so he's donating enough money for another 75 vests.

Baumgarten says she's grateful for the partnership with police, and the opportunity to save lives.

"If this can help save one life even, that would be awesome," said Baumgarten. "I just want to thank them for being on board with this, and handing out the vest to people, so they become more visible."

If you would like to help this effort, Altoona Police said they will gladly take donations, whether they be more vests, other reflective gear, or money to buy them.
