ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) -- The construction of one of the area's newest schools is now finished.

On Thursday, the Altoona School District held an open house for its new Altoona Elementary school. The school was three years in the making, and features interactive computer labs, a library and areas for students and the community to gather.

In November 2014, voters in the district approved a $23,000,000 referendum to build a new elementary school and improve existing schools. It passed by an 800-vote margin.

"We're thankful to the community for supporting the referendum and supporting the school," said Superintendent Connie Biedron. "There's a lot of community spaces in the school because we want it to be a community school. So, we're really excited, and we're looking forward to have the kids come here."

Biedron said the project was on time and under budget. Classes are scheduled to begin at the school on Sept. 7.
