Altoona (WQOW) - Work is expected to start in a couple of weeks to lay the infrastructure for a major development in Altoona. Thursday night, the city council awarded a $2.6 million contract to Haas Sons Construction.

The plans unveiled this week call for mix of retail and commercial buildings, and a park area in the River Prairie development. Workers will now start to remove trees, and install water mains, storm and sanitary sewer lines, to serve the 50-acre site.

They will also add turn lanes to River Prairie Drive for access to the site and to the new Woodman's grocery store, which is currently under construction.
