Police


The Altoona Police Department originated in 1947 as a one person department and presently consists of the Police Chief, eleven full-time officers, two part-time officers, one full-time and one part-time administrative assistant.

Anonymous Tip
A 24-hour "anonymous tip" line is available to anyone wishing to remain anonymous. The recorded message will allow you to provide information you feel is important to the police. Call 715-839-4982, (Please identify which city police department you wish information to go to).

Bicycle License
Residents of the City of Altoona are encouraged to purchase a license for their bicycle(s). License tags can be purchased at the Altoona Police Department from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday - Friday. Calendar Day Parking Regulations (Ord. 10.19)
Between November 15 and April 15, alternate side parking regulations are in effect on all streets in the City of Altoona

  • On odd-numbered days, vehicles shall only be parked, stopped or left standing on that side of the street having odd-numbered addresses.
  • On even-numbered days, vehicles shall only be parked, stopped or left standing on that side of the street having even-numbered addresses.
  • This ordinance shall only be in effect between midnight and 7:00am.
  • This ordinance shall not supersede more restrictive parking regulations in effect in the city, such as during snow emergencies on "Snow Emergency Routes," "No Parking Zones," etc. You must still abide by those rules as well.
  • Any person(s) whose residence or dwelling has a private driveway, or other area of usable off street parking, subject to his/her control, shall not park, stop, or leave standing any vehicle on any residential street between midnight and 7:00 a.m.
  • Residents shall park in the evening subject to the next day's number, not the present evening's number.

Pet Laws

  • City Ordinance 6.08.010 requires that any person who owns or keeps a dog over the age of five months within the corporate limits of the city must have the animal licensed each year.
    • City Ordinance 6.08.030 requires that all dogs and cats be cared for, maintained and handled in a humane and sanitary manner and in such a way to prevent noises, barking, fighting or howling or other disturbances of the peace and quiet of the neighborhood.
    • City Ordinance 6.08.070 prohibits any person to permit any dog or cat to run at large within the city and prohibits any dog or cat to be permitted on the public sidewalks or streets of the city unless controlled by a leash which shall not be more than six feet long.
    • City ordinance 6.08.080 states that any person who keeps more than one dog may, instead of the license tax for each dog required by this chapter, apply to the collecting official for a multiple dog license for the keeping of the dogs. 
  • Fine amount for the violations to the above Ordinances are set presently for the amount of $110.75.

     

Safety Education
The Altoona Police Department provides officers to speak at school, civic organizations, neighborhood groups, etc. for public safety and awareness programs.
 

Severe Weather Alert
The City of Altoona has an emergency weather warning system consisting of sirens placed throughout the city. The sounding of sirens is a signal of severe weather approaching the Altoona area. The sirens are tested on a monthly basis from April through November to ensure proper functioning. These tests are performed the first Monday of the month at 11:00am.
