The Public Works Department is responsible for managing the City's
Water Utilities which includes drinking water, wastewater and
storm water.
The City's Water Utility Department is committed to providing
safe, adequate, reliable and affordable utility services
consistent with local, state and federal regulations and
applicable industry standards and practices. Water in
Altoona is provided by a municipal water system with six wells
capable of pumping over 950 gallons per minute with an average
daily usage of about 1.3 million gallons. The Water
Utilities Department manages the wastewater collection system
that is conveyed through a major interceptor sewer and lift
station system to the Eau Claire Wastewater Treatment Plant
where it is treated. The Utilities Department also manages
a storm water collection system that collects storm water from
local roads and other property and conveys it to discharge
points located throughout the community.
Activities performed by the Water Utilities Department
include storm and wastewater line maintenance, cleaning and
repair; drinking water quality testing; water hydrant
maintenance; pump and well maintenance; regional storm water
pond maintenance; environmental permit administration; and
engineering and construction management.
