Altoona sixth graders create, donate hygiene bags for displaced kids

Altoona (WQOW) - Emergency responders will be able to offer some extra comfort to displaced children, thanks to some local middle school students.

A group of sixth grade students from Altoona put together hygiene care bags with items donated by United Methodist Church. The 12 bags were then donated to the Altoona Police and Fire Departments to give to kids displaced from homes after an emergency. The bags contain things like shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste for kids in times of need.

"The children a lot of times, they're taken away from a home or a situation where they don't have anything, they have the clothes on their back, and it gives them something to survive for a day or two, until other resources can be established by Red Cross or whatever it may be," said Lt. David Livingston with the Altoona PD.

Livingston also told News 18 the departments are always accepting those bags, so anyone is welcome to make one themselves and drop them off during office hours.
