ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) -- Area students are helping out a local police department.

Students at Altoona Elementary School held a coin drive to raise money for the Altoona Police Department to get a K9.
The students raised over $2,200 during the drive.
Some of the students sold crafts and donated the money to the fund.
Teacher Sheila Anderson says she just wanted to return the favor to the Altoona Police Department.
"They have done so much for our school. They fill in as crossing guards, they come out on the playground and play with the kids, they're here to do bus duty with us, and they're just amazing."
"This for me is a super sweet moment both my kids being in elementary school and getting to experience this and really coming back to where this started for me is beyond my wildest dreams," says Anthony Helstern with Altoona PD.
To thank the kids for their donation, the Altoona Police Department is going to let them name their new K9. Read more about this article »
