Downtown Traffic Pattern Changes Coming Soon

Friday, August 22, 2025
City Staff

The City of Altoona is continuing its work to improve the downtown area-making it safer for both drivers and pedestrians, adding more parking options, and reducing speeding.

Beginning Wednesday, August 27th at 10:00 a.m., a new traffic pattern will go into effect:

  • Spooner Avenue will become a one-way street starting at 1st Street West and continuing around the corner on Division Street to Lynn Avenue.
  • Turning north onto Division Street from Lynn Avenue will no longer be allowed.
  • 1st Street East will become a one-way street, allowing exits only from The Yard parking lot.
  • A new four-way stop will be added at Lynn Avenue and Division Street.

You'll notice extra signage and barricades as we help drivers adjust to these changes. We know it can take time to break old driving habits, but these updates are an important step toward reducing vehicle-pedestrian conflicts as downtown sees more foot traffic.

The City will continue monitoring traffic in the area to ensure safety improvements are effective. As part of this process, you'll also see additional parking added downtown.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work together to make downtown Altoona safer and more accessible for everyone!
