Altoona Care Closet receives large donation to help students & families

Altoona (WQOW) - As students return to school across the state, the School District of Altoona now has more resources to help families thanks to a special donation.

The Altoona Care Closet is a resource for families to get clothes, shoes, food, hygiene products - nearly anything they could need. The closet recently received more than $3,400 in donations from the Rock'n on the River summer concert series in Altoona. Of that amount, $2,000 was donated personally by Mayor Brendan Pratt to support the Care Closet's food pantry. The rest of the money will be used to stock the closet with hygiene products.

Joyce Orth with the Altoona School District said the closet helps fill a gap in the community and provides families in the school district with clothes, shoes, and anything they could need. "We just want our families to know that there's a resource for them if they have a month that's rough, or if it's always rough," Orth said. "They're always welcome to come here during our open hours."

The Care Closet will be open on the first Wednesday of the month from October to June.

Orth said items needed at the closet constantly change, and updated lists are on their website. If you'd like to help, click here.
