Community members gathered at the outdoor plaza at River Prairie to visit about eight vendors.

Families were able to listen to music and eat lots of goodies.

The farmers market will run from 4 to 7 p.m.

Organizers say they're looking to target the evening market as people are getting off work.

They say farmers markets are so important to local communities.

"They provide access to fresh vegetables and produce. A great means for local farmers to sell their products. They enrich the community in a number of ways," said Roy Atkinson with the City of Altoona.

The farmers market in Altoona is scheduled every Monday afternoon through the end of October.
