Altoona (WQOW)- The Altoona Police Department is encouraging residents to form neighborhood associations so they can be the eyes and ears of their community.
Officer Tim Peterson said there's only one neighborhood association in Altoona, and it's over by the new Casey's General Store.
Peterson said it doesn't cost a thing to form a neighborhood association.
He said typically the association members will meet quarterly at the police department or at a neighbor's home.
Peterson said a police officer will be at the meeting to listen to any occurring problems and discuss some solutions to keep the community safe.
"I think it makes it safer," Peterson said. "It's an official association just to have people looking out for each other. Looking out for their neighbors looking out for things that are suspicious in the neighborhood and just kinda talking amongst each other to see if it's normal, if it's somebody they know or if it's something they should call the police [about]."
Peterson said if you're interested in forming an association in your neighborhood you should contact the police department on Facebook or call during business hours.
