Storm Damage and Building Permits

Wednesday, June 18, 2025
City of Altoona staff

Our region experienced a significant storm on May 15, 2025. It caused substantial property damage resulting in a need for property owners to make repairs. In Altoona, a building permit is required to re-roof and/or re-side your home or business. The benefits of obtaining a building permit are:

  • SAFETY
Permits ensure that construction adheres to building codes, which are designed to protect the public from hazards like structural collapse, fire, and electrical issues.
  • COMPLIANCE
Building permits ensure that projects comply with local zoning laws and building codes, preventing potential legal issues, and ensuring the work is done correctly.
  • PROPERTY VALUE
Unpermitted work can negatively impact a property's value, as it may not be insurable or easily sellable in the future.
  • PROJECT REVIEW AND INSPECTIONS
The permit process includes a review of the project plans by building officials and inspections during construction, ensuring quality control and adherence to codes.
  • FUTURE SALE
When selling a property, potential buyers may check for permits. Unpermitted work can cause delays or even prevent a sale.
