City of Altoona Implements Partial Watering Restriction

Tuesday, May 30, 2023
City of Altoona staff

ALTOONA--In order to reduce water demand during the summer, which peaks due to turf grass irrigation, the City of Altoona is ordering a partial restriction on watering lawns.  The restriction applies to all City of Altoona water customers including residents, businesses, and schools.  Irrigation of newly established lawns is exempt from this restriction for a period of 30 days after seeding.

These measures are being implemented immediately to conserve water in order to maintain an adequate supply for drinking and fire protection while still allowing residents to keep their lawns well irrigated.  The impact of summer irrigation triples daily water consumption compared to an average off-season day; however, if residents water their lawns consistent with the schedule described below, the peak demand will be significantly reduced.

The following watering restrictions shall be in effect at all times:

  • Allowed lawn watering times are before 8 a.m. and after 7 p.m. with the following restrictions based on address:
    • Odd-numbered street addresses are permitted to water lawns on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
    • Even-numbered street addresses are permitted to water lawns Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
  • No lawn watering shall be permitted on Sundays.

The restriction will remain in effect until a press release cancelling the restriction is issued by the City.*

These restrictions are being implemented consistent with Altoona Municipal Ordinance 13.28.010. Failure to comply with the ban could result in a fine up to $500 for the first offense.  If you have any questions regarding the ban, please contact the City of Altoona at (715) 839-6092 or visit the City's website at www.ci.altoona.wi.us for updates.

The City thanks you for your cooperation.  Two new wells are currently under construction, with completion anticipated for late fall.  These wells will significantly increase the City's water capacity.
