$500 Tools for Schools grant presented to ELL students at Altoona Elementary

Altoona (WQOW) - The Tools for Schools program is back for the 2016-2017 school year. Once a month a $500 grant, courtesy of Sylvan Learning Center, United Bank, and Eau Claire's own News 18, is presented to an area school.

The first recipient this year is Altoona Elementary. First grade teacher Edna Borrero will be using the $500 to help English language learners, students where English is their second language. She will be purchasing at least six CD players for ELL students to bring home and practice reading. Borrero hopes this is for more than just the students.

"I would love for the parents, that they could get involved with their students, and start learning English too," Borrero says.

Borrero understands the difficulty of learning a new language. She is originally from Puerto Rico, so English is her second language too. This year at Altoona Elementary there are 27 ELL students speaking six different languages.
