There is a new reason for students, community to get out and active in Altoona

Altoona (WQOW) - A new trail in Altoona gives local students another reason to get outside and be active.

The trail was built thanks to a $20,000 grant from Mayo Clinic Health System.

It features six different fitness stations to encourage outdoor activity.

The fitness trail is also designated to teach the students about collaboration as they will be responsible for upkeep of the trail during fall and spring months.

Local scouts will install benches and help with the upkeep of the trail.

"We're dealing with the larger community and the needs, not just of the students but the needs within the community for a good healthy lifestyle," said Altoona Interim Superintendent Ron Walsh. "That's something that Altoona has been going after for years, not just at the school level but the community level as well and I think when you combine those resources of the community along with the school, everybody did see the need that it would benefit the whole wide community."

The trail is open to the community and runs adjacent to the Altoona Elementary School.
