The 20 Safest Cities in Wisconsin - 2017 | Altoona is #16

Not only do the twenty cities on our list exemplify Wisconsin's strong commitment to public safety, but Wisconsin is also one of the most proactive states when it comes to combating opioid addiction-a problem that has become a national epidemic.1 In 2016, Wisconsin governor Scott Walker signed eight more Heroin, Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Agenda bills into law, bringing the state's total to sixteen.2

This important legislation is just one example of the Badger State's commitment to protecting its citizens. In fact, the twenty safest Wisconsin cities recognized this year all boast civic-minded programs that help keep their residents safe. These cities put together safety camps, neighborhood watch organizations, and programs that combat drinking and driving.

Eighteen of the cities on our list reported fewer than ten violent crimes, according to the FBI's most recent data. And two of them-Bayside and the Village of East Troy-had zero violent crimes. Overall, there were fewer than ninety total violent crimes reported among all twenty of the state's safest cities. In addition, every city on our list boasts violent crime and property crime rates that are below both the national and state averages. To top it off, Oregon and Muskego are also among the top 100 safest cities in the country.

You don't need to live in one of the safest cities to contribute to the security of your community. Even if your city didn't make the list this year, our Wisconsin Safety Directoryincludes all the resources you need to make 2017 the safest year yet for your home, family, and neighborhood. So whether you're checking out home security systems or emergency preparedness tips, bookmark this valuable collection of resources for easy reference.

How We Chose the Safest Cities in Wisconsin

To identify the safest cities in Wisconsin, we reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2015, along with population data. We eliminated all cities with fewer than 3,500 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

If your city made the list, share the news by embedding the "Wisconsin Safest Cities" badge on your site. Click here to get the code, then just copy and paste.

From there, we evaluated the remaining cities. We narrowed it down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. To further level the playing field, we calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
