Contractor Compliance with City Ordinances Following Recent Storm Damage

Friday, May 23, 2025

In light of the recent storm damage, the City reminds all businesses and contractors to comply with local ordinances regarding direct sales (door-to-door solicitation), yard signage, and construction permitting.

Direct Sales / Door-to-Door Solicitation
A permit from City Hall is required for any door-to-door sales activity for contractors that are not local. To be considered local, contractors must be based in Eau Claire County or a county adjoining Eau Claire County.

Yard Signs
Contractor yard signs are prohibited on public property, including within road rights-of-way, and are only permitted on private property where active work is being performed by a contractor. In such cases, only one sign is allowed per property.

Construction Permits
Most construction activities require a building permit issued by the City of Altoona. The property owner or a Wisconsin licensed contractor may apply for a permit. The City utilizes an on-line permitting platform. To start your application, please click here >>

Enforcement and Sign Removal
City staff are actively removing signs within the right-of-way that are in violation of ordinance regulations. If contractors have signs in resident's yards, and work is not being completed on the property, the sign must be removed. Signs removed by the City can be retrieved from the Police Department within the next week.

Compliance Reminder
Violations of city ordinances may result in citations. We appreciate your cooperation as you conduct business in our community.
