Altoona (WQOW) - The Altoona City Council has officially approved the selection of Kelly Bakken as the city's new police chief.

Bakken was the top choice of five finalists. She is the current police chief in Black River Falls and has worked in law enforcement since 1998.

She said the city's growth is a key reason she sought out the job in Altoona.

"It's a great opportunity with a little larger department than what I'm currently working in and I like that it's fast-paced. I like to be busy. I like to be challenged. I think that Altoona has that to offer," Bakken said.

Bakken replaces Jesse James who stepped down after being elected to the Assembly. Her contract will still need to be approved but she said she's likely to start in mid-March.
